Program of social activities of the state in favour of social insurance of citizens has taken no account of private farmers for a very long time. Private farmers and their families working on their own account on their farms had no right to free medical assistance still at the beginning of the 70s and almost to the end of this period they were deprived of insurance protection.
Despite many later changes in legislation, farmers' social insurance system functioned on the strength of the unchanged assumptions, which were accepted at the end of the 70s. New solutions, introduced on the 1 January 1991, changed this situation.
Together with the new agricultural social insurance system introduced by the Law of 20 December 1990, the Agricultural Social Insurance Fund (Kasa Rolniczego Ubezpieczenia Społecznego - KRUS) was established.
